With Halloween fast approaching, why not make a fuzzy spider friend? Pompom spiders are a traditional and fun thing to make, and they go wonderfully with a witch’s costume.

You can use black materials for a scary halloween spider, or why not go for something fluffy. I used pink and white for mine.

You will need: a toilet roll, wool, pipecleaners, stick-on eyes, (or card eyes and glue).

To make this:

Spider Pompom Step 3: Start wrapping wool round the end with the slit.

1) Flatten a toilet roll.

2) Cut it in half (or to the width of the pompom body. Cut a slit most of the way in to it and fold the cardboard back.

3) Start wrapping wool round the end with the slit. Don’t wrap it too tightly and press the two sides of the cut together, and be careful not to go off the end.

4) Once the pom-pom maker is wrapped, cut the remaining wool away. Then cut a new piece of wool long enough to wrap it several times.

5) Thread the wool through the centre hole of the toilet roll, behind the wool.

6) Get your pipecleaners. Make sure they are long enough to stick out a good way each side of the wool or your spider will have short legs!

7) Thread the pipecleaners through the middle of the wool, diagonally  against the toilet roll.

8) Tie the loose section of wool round the middle of the bundle round the wrapped wool and the pipecleaners. Make sure it is nice and tight to hold them all together. You may want to wrap and knot it several times to make sure it is secure.

9) Slide the toilet roll card out.

10) Cut round the wool loops on each side (not the centre tie!) to make a pom-pom.

11) Fluff the pom-pom. (An optional step but fun!)

Spider Pompom Step 10: Fluff the pompom and add the eyes.

12) Bend the pipecleaners to make legs. An easy way to get them the same length is to bend them over your fingertip, making sure the leg goes down to your first joint.

13) Get the sticky-on eyes and stick them on – or cut some eyes out of card and glue them on!

14) Admire your work!

To make things easier, there’s a full slideshow below of each step. Please feel free to share pictures of your pom-pom below or on our facebook page!
